course review
As I look back on this class I realize how much I’ve learned about career development. Getting a degree is one thing, but building self confidence and gaining experience must be included in your career plan to be successful. Being self confident and having a positive outlook can make all the difference in a great career plan. I am one who needs to find balance; my career will never come before my family but will support my family. It’s important to find a career that supports your values and needs.
Behavioral Science is a great career path for me because I really enjoy working with people, and there are so many jobs in my field that I can have a career that still leaves time for my family. I’ve never really sat down and thought about my specific skills, so that was a great eye opener for me. The work place is changing and so are careers, being able to job shadow and see firsthand what different people do is a great way to decide on a career.
I thought page 185 was interesting where it talks about writing down things you would enjoy doing even if you didn’t get paid. I think sometimes we choose a career just for the money aspect then find we aren’t happy. Such as lawyers who have the highest pay rate and the lowest rate of happiness. Developing networks is so important in finding a great job opening or internship. The assignments we did online were so great at helping me find new resources to use in building my skills. I’m a senior at UVU but still have a few more semesters (thanks to the math department.) So I can gain experience in my field and build networks while I’m still in school. I hope to graduate with a lot of great experience and a resume to back up my skills, which in the end will help me start off my career with a great job. Volunteering and informational interviewing can be very helpful in gaining experience and insight. I am starting my volunteer program with CASA in the fall and am so excited to help out a child in need. I plan to do some more job shadowing before I graduate and maybe an internship if I can find the time to balance it with, kids and school. I really want to start working when I finish my bachelor’s degree so I can help support the family while my Husband goes to school, and while I work on my Masters degree. To do this I must pass my math classes so I can graduate, network and get to know more people and contacts in my field, I need to explore different positions a little more and dive into my volunteer opportunities. It’s really hard to find time to do all these things while raising 3 small children and being the maid, the cook and the wife, and running a small business , but I think if I use the information I have learned in this class is will be a little bit easier. Some of the great new ideas I have learned of in this class give me place to start and a direction to go in. I’m really glad I took this course, and know that my portfolio and assignments will help me remember what I’ve discovered and help me move forward in building my career plan and meeting my goals.
