I chose to job shadow the person I interviewed in a previous assignment. I went to Mountain View High school to shadow the school counselors. I chose to do this, because I think being a counselor will work out great for me. The hours are good for having small children, I get a break during the summer to be with my kids, there are usually job openings in education and I love working with kids. I already asked her my questions over the phone in my interview so I wasn’t asking as many questions while I was there I was mostly observing her position. I did ask her the following:
1. What education do you have?
-Masters Degree
2. Do you think after completing my education I will be able to find a job?
- Everyone I know that has wanted a job in this field as a counselor has been able to get one; there are a lot of schools in this area.
3. Is this a job I can do with kids at home?
-I had 5 children when I started my career, and being on the same schedule as them most of the time has worked out nicely.
My first impression of the field, is that it is a little different than I thought. I seems to be more appointments with parents and students about things like class schedules, and deciding which classes to take next year than actually discussing personal problems with students. I would like a little more private office than some of the counselors at Mountain View, but it wasn’t bad
